FAQs

1. Are these items made of glass?

No. All items are made of epoxy resin with colorants and add-ins like stones, shells or glass.

2. So what is epoxy resin, or “resin”?

According to Wikipedia: “Epoxy is the family of basic components or cured end products of epoxy resins. Epoxy resins, also known as polyepoxides, are a class of reactive prepolymers and polymers which contain epoxide groups. The epoxide functional group is also collectively called epoxy.[1] The IUPAC name for an epoxide group is an oxirane.”

In simpler terms, it’s 2 chemicals, added together in the correct proportions, that become a hard plastic-like material when it cures.

3. Are the items REALLY one-of-a-kind?

Yes! I generally only pour one item at a time. I may make something SIMILAR, but there will never be two items exactly alike.

4. Are your items formed using molds?

Sometimes. I do have some items that are left to cure in the mold - the octopi, the lidded jars, the frogs - but other items are removed from the mold before fully cured to be shaped into something else.

5. Are the items “food-safe”?

The labelling on the epoxies I use say they are. HOWEVER, it is unknown how or even if the FDA has tested any of these products. I believe most items are safe to serve rolls in on your dinner table, for example. I don’t recommend storing any food in any resin container. I wouldn’t recommend using any resin product to serve a “wet” food, like cheese - this is one reason I don’t make charcuterie boards.

6. Any other cautions?

Please note that, like glass or plastic, edges can be sharp. In general, I try to sand down edges where needed. There are some items, especially some of the art pieces, that are intentionally left jagged or unfinished.
